The Wingfield Railway group was formed in 1981 by a small group of railway modellers
who had the desire to build, operate and exhibit layouts based on modern railway
practice. The Group has a clubroom within the Staveley Workshops complex
which was previously the British Steel offices situated on Works Road, near
Staveley, Chesterfield. Meetings are held most Thursday evenings but members
who are working on group and other projects often use the premises at other
times. Currently the Group has two layouts:- Hasland Loco Shed is based on the locomotive shed of that name which was located to the south of Chesterfield although the passing tracks are somewhat reduced due to constraints of space. The layout is operated in the LMS and early British Rail eras. Stonedale Quarry made its first public appearance at the Bakewell exhibition in June 2006. This modern era layout is based on a quarry somewhere in the Peak District of Derbyshire and features a double track main line together with the quarry sidings and loading facilities. As well as the Group layouts several members have their own layouts which are often exhibited with help from other members. The highlight of the year is the Peak Exhibition held at the Agricultural Business Centre in Bakewell, a small town in the heart of the Peak District of Derbyshire. Taking place in early June each year the event brings together a selection of Group owned and/or members layouts together with many visiting layouts from clubs and individuals.
